Liver-Related Work

Clinical and Research Interests: I am an Associate Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and a Transplant Hepatologist at the Starzl Transplant Institute. My clinical and research interests are centered on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and alcoholic liver disease (ALD).  I established and staff the UPMC Fatty Liver Clinic at the Digestive Disease Center at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. This multidisciplinary clinic is dedicated to providing cutting edge, integrated, and innovative care to patients with NAFLD and overlapping systemic metabolic disorders such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes mellitus. The major focus areas of my research are:
  1. Elucidating the metabolic pathways disrupted in NAFLD and ALD;
  2. Developing novel models of care and precision medicine approaches to NAFLD and ALD; and
  3. Noninvasive diagnosis and assessment of fatty liver disease.
Ongoing Research Studies:

I am the site PI or co-investigator on several investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored clinical studies on the diagnosis and management of NAFLD. In addition, I have several collaborative studies with other clinical and basic scientists focused on various aspects of ALD, NAFLD, and other chronic liver diseases.
